Victoria Recap and the future of Scott Robert

      IE2008AmberIMG_1393-Edit-Ed.jpg
It's a bonus when your students can be models too. When I saw this building, I had this vision of Amber.

    Image Explorations 2008, Victoria, Canada
    Reflections....

I can see myself living in Canada, maybe not in the winter, but certainly during the summer months! This was my first year at IE 2008 and it was a tremendous experience. My class was just awesome, all 27 of them. I had the distinction of having the largest class and I tried hard to give them a week filled with so much great information, I wanted their brains to explode.

Of course, in true Scott Robert form, we had all the hotties in our class- so we had plenty of models and when we didn't we just took pictures of our good looking classmates. It was so nice to be around such dedicated and passionate individuals and I hope this is not the end but the start of some great relationships. I know many of you will be coming to Paris and others are furiously working on it- Paris is going to be another amazing week in Sept.

Just wanted to thank all my classmates and my models, so sorry if I miss someone...
Tristan, Scott, Shaun, Chantal, Mark, Rod, Lane, Amanda, Dirk, Amber, Michael, Krista, Stuart, Jenna-Marie, Sarah, Rockie, Arnold, Trevor, Tyler, Carolyn, Raymond, Stewart, Ian, Gurminder, Jeremy, Erik, Tony, Linda, Su-Yin.

    No more Weddings for me?

Someone (Mark?) in the class, asked me a great question at the wrap-up Q and A time, "What is the next frontier for Scott Robert?" As I have more time to think about that questions and as I see my photography evolve, I know I'm going to make some big changes in my life. I ask myself the following question...

What I'm I passionate about and what do I enjoy doing?? I have to say I love educating and I love taking fine art, fashion pictures of women. Not necessarily famous women, just the people I come across who love, fashion, style and art. I believe that women are God's most beautiful creation and it captivates me. I enjoy taking the beautiful girl next door and giving them images that look like works of art to be admired and appreciated, forever.

I am also getting asked to speak / teach and I simply love it- doors are opening for me in this area at a crazy pace.  In fact this week, I've been asked if I'd be interested in speaking to the Korean Professional Photographers Association- 11,000 members. I see the results of my teaching and it is amazing and extremely rewarding to give people HOPE of a better future and tools to expand their creativity. It is so touching and humbling to see people literally in tears of appreciation because of what I have shared with them. It is so rewarding to be able help people in a deep and significant way.

So where does this leave wedding photography for me?? I'm not sure but I have to say, I absolutely do not like taking so long to process client images/albums but because I like to put my signature style into every session and make it amazing, which takes A LOT of post processing time- I am forced to have long turnaround times- which hangs greatly over my head, a constant uncomfortable feeling. So, with that being said, 2009 may be the last year of doing wedding photography fulltime. Every wedding takes at least 3-4 weeks and although, I love weddings- the time it takes is enormous so I will probably be raising my rates to $20,000 in 2010.

    Creating a New Market

In the future, say next year or so,  I would like to start taking fine art portraits of people BUT with a high fashion emphasis. Images that are timeless and that people would love to hang on their walls, not because it is of them but because first and foremost it is a work of art that can be enjoyed by everyone. I know my skill is not quite there yet, but I do believe and will be passionate about creating more fine art imagery. My workshops take me around the world and I do believe my portfolio in a year so will be more developed and because of my world travels, rather captivating and interesting.

I can still take pictures of brides, but it just wont be wedding day and it will be very fine art/fashion based. I think women love to give images as GIFTS to their husbands where they look, beautiful, elegant and sexy. My fine art fashion images do all of this and can be enjoyed by ALL, where a boudoir session is more private in nature and is aimed at being sexy which is only one aspect of a women, where I see women in a deeper way with layers and I think women don't have to take off all of their clothes to be sexy. A women walking across the street, dressed nice with a great pair of shoes and sunglasses can be sexy to me and yet it speaks so much more about the woman.

In turn, these fine art images can be sold, be put in nice books, displayed in galleries across the world and enjoyed by many. At times I feel God speaks to me and gives me words of affirmation and encouragement through others and while coming home from Canada, I had the pleasure of sitting next to someone who knew a lot about the art world- she viewed some of the prints I made from the workshop and images on my iPhone and sensed I was holding myself back and that I should pursue developing my fine art / fashion photography because it can impact the world at a greater level.  She point blank looked at me, and told me I was more than a "wedding photographer "and that I was an extraordinary artist. She did say I had some work to do and gave me some great advise from an artistic viewpoint that only 1-10,000 people could give me and mentioned I did have the potential to be great.  A few of my images blew her away and that she had seen nothing like it. I felt my soul stir and knew this was a voice to listen to and knew this meeting was not by chance. The battle I was having within myself was becoming clear and put into place everything that I have been struggling with.

I guess there is always fear doing something new and scary, giving up a job that creates more than 50% of your income but I'm all about taking risk, pursuing your dreams and doing only the things we are passionate about.  So it is clear, this is the path I'm going to take, I have nothing to fear because if I don't succeed in my new vision, I can always do what I'm doing now but I never will know what is out there if I don't at least give it a try.
I leave you with some photos I took during my week at IE2008. I look forward to next year with great anticipation.

Classmate Ray's beautiful cousin, Natasha (heck, her name even sounds sexy!). I can't believe how many beautiful, successful, SINGLE women there are in Victoria, then it was brought to my attention that there is a 4 to 1 ratio of women to men!!

Our models Su-Yin and Linda, two wonderful people that I had the fortunate of striking a friendship with- Canadians are so friendly! Su-Yin is a professional ballet dancer that recently retired and is now in medical school and is a nurse. Linda is also an amazing, warm and photo hobbyist who also is a nurse. I think I need to do a HOT NURESES OF VICTORIA calendar!!!! The two of them are best friends and are pretty dang crazy and extremely fun to be around. They told me they wanted to come to Paris with us so you will definitely see more amazing photos of them! They are HOT!!! If I lived in Victoria, I think I would get sick every week just to see them! hahahaa.

Jenna-Marie our classmate from Alberta that can bust out the modeling moves too. She is a very talented photographer, I'm betting she'll be with us in Paris- she's loves her LuLuLemon and is a designer girl all the way.

    IE2008_IMG_0963-Edit-Edit.jpg
Amanda, is also a classmate and such a great person and model too. In fact she was modeling for another photographer and the image of her won a first place prize! She is a youth pastor in Alberta and a very HOT one at that.

Caribbean Cruise Workshop, Key West, Day 3-4

To tell the truth, day three started out disastrous! But sometimes we need to make lemonade out of lemons and our disappointment turned into a blessing. Our initial idea turned out to be a complete flop but in the end we took over this private resort with no one around. We had absolutely the best time in one of the most beautiful places to take photos, Cozumel, Mexico. I said to myself, wow today was just one of those magical days, something totally unexpected and fabulous.

We ended the cruise with a day on sea and it was more of a classroom day with no scheduled shooting. After dinner Christiana and Roger wanted a sunset photo so it turned out the entire class followed me and we had this mini photo session that was completely wild. We started taking pictures of the models but we realized this was the last time we would get pictures of everyone together so we started taking pictures of each other too. The strong wind in our faces, off camera flashes firing every second and fun a laughter completely engulfed us. In fact there are some pretty ridiculous photos of me out there and I hope they never surface!!!

We all went to see Christiana and Roger dominate the talent show that night and we all went out dancing the night away and finishing off the late night (early morning) eating another meal together. I felt like we never wanted our time to end and we tried to savor every minute together. However, exhaustion and incoherent talk took over and we found ourselves finally calling it a night and sadly ending the last night of our cruise.

Thanks everyone for the memories and the million and one good times that I will take with me for many years to come!!

Notes from a recent article sent to me  **click here**

The number of American families adopting children from China is rocketing, according to figures from the US department of state. In 2005, immigration authorities issued 7,906 visas to Chinese orphans beginning new lives with families in the US, up from 4,681 in 2001. Most are girls, unwanted in a society in which men are traditionally the breadwinners. More than 30 million babies are born in China each year and hundreds of thousands are made available for adoption. The cost varies, but most people adopting spend up to $25,000 (13,000) plus travel expenses.

Comments: "hundreds of thousands are made available for adoption." This is false, China limits the number of legal adoptions out of the country because of the intense paperwork and screening process required for each adoption, they can not keep up with the high number of families that want to adopt from China. Hundreds of thousands of babies may be abandoned but only a selected few are actually placed into the adoption process.

Most abandoned babies are from low income rural areas, because of the one child rule, a son is the only source of retirement plan a rural family has since daughters leave the family when married. However, in the city areas, the Chinese have a different attitude and have no particular preference towards having a boy or a girl.  I was under the impression that almost all girls are abandoned in China but after talking to many of the local city dwellers in China I found out this not to be true, just an unfortunate practice done in the poor rural areas of the country.

More and more families in China are adopting now that the government has made this open to them which is quite wonderful. Most Chinese families will sacrifice a year or more of their annual average household salary to pay for an adoption.

This photo represents what my workshops are all about- people working and learning together to create amazing images. Thanks to Laura pictured above and all the models who sacrificed a couple days to be with us. I saw Bandele working with her on this amazing moving van and I couldn't resist. Thanks B for the inspiration! Thanks for providing the magazine Laura is sitting on too! hahaha.

I'd love to put a slideshow together of all the great images but I'm not sure if I have the time to do it! So these smattering of images will have to do for now. All of us at this workshop had such a great time, I so wish I was back in NYC but life moves on.

I unleashed my new posing lecture which was a big hit, also be sure to look at the work of all the students too, I know they also have some amazing stuff! I've been concentrating on my post processing a little more lately, that is why it is taking longer for my blog entries, I have been enjoying creating images with a fine art feel lately. I always like pushing the limits and expanding my craft. I don't post process all my images this way, just certain ones that work.

Special thanks to all the models and to Liz who held the workshop together! Also to May, Anita, Chris, Peter, Daniel and Sherry who were the locals who showed us around their great town and kept us from getting lost on the subway!!

Thanks to everyone who came from all over the country and from the UK!

I wanted to take a glamour shot of Abigail. It took three people to help me, Daniel holding the main light behind her, Liz holding a reflector illuminating her eyes and Richard blocking light from a nearby light fixture which reduced distracting light! Christina, Bandele and Stacey watching in the background.
