  • WPPI competition and the joy of competing

    The Joy of Competing

I received the Kodak Award of Distinction for this print which scored a 93, the highest in it's category.

    Why Compete?

Wouldn't it be great to compete in the Olympics, World Series, World Cup, Super Bowl, The Masters, Wimbledon? What a privilege it is to compete against the world's best. To give it your best and see where you stack up. This is exactly the reason why I think everyone who is into photography should submit their prints into the WPPI print and album competitions. There is tremendous, nerve racking tension when you submit your prints to be scored. You are exposing yourself for all the world to see- images you think are your best. Your soul is on display and you feel like your standing in front of a judging panel with only your underwear on.  For all those that have entered, we know the act of submitting a print is a tremendous accomplishment in itself! But once you expose yourself, it gets easier and easier.

It was truly an honor to receive 15 awards of excellence at this years WPPI competition and on top of that, I also received the prestigious Kodak Award of Distinction. To be recognized by your peers is truly an honor. I want to publicly thank WPPI and all the judges for all their hard work and sacrifice- giving two days of their life scoring all the prints. I thought they did a tremendous job. In a brief moment of complete stupidity, I was critical of the judging process and I stated some things out of complete ignorance because I didn't understand the judging process. So I want to apologize to all who may have caught wind of my negative statements and I want all to know that I whole-heartedly support all WPPI competitions and feel that it is a privilege to be able to compete.

I also accomplished a life long goal which was to achieve the Accolade of Photographic Mastery from WPPI. Few people achieve this award because it is the accumulation of 20 points or award winning prints receiving a score of 80 or above which is an Accolade of Excellence which is really hard to do. I say a person scoring 78s could earn a great, full-time living with photography! The APM usually takes years to accomplish. For example, the first year I competed, I submitted 14 prints and scored 80 and above on 3 prints, not one scoring above an 82. This year I scored 80 and above on a little over half my submissions which may never happen to me again, so I feel extremely honored, especially when people where saying this year's judging was extremely tough. My original goal was to get five over 80. So even with 15 points this year, it still took me 3-4 years to get my APM so I am very proud of this accomplishment. I am a college drop out and never received my college degree, it was important for me as an educator to be dedicated to a process that took several years to accomplish- just like earning a degree or even harder. I wanted to be a good example of persistence and commitment to excellence over the span of several years.

WPPI is a tremendous event and it is crazy walking around with 13,000 photographers and getting to listen and hear some amazing world famous photographers like Jerry Ghionis, David Jay, Ron Dawson (videographer), Matthew Jordan Smith and Yervant. I also wish I could have heard Jim Garner speak too but I had a scheduling conflict. That is the problem sometimes, you can never hear everyone! David Jay and I are doing a workshop in September, we are still trying to figure out where we want to go- any suggestions?

I will make a separate post about my VEGAS workshop which was so much fun- just waiting for more images from my students so I can show them off! Hurry up people!!

Part of the joy of competing in a world wide competition and doing well is having the confidence of knowing that you can go toe to toe with the best, a reward that only comes by competing against the best.  Below are my award winning prints- click to enlarge.

"The more you know, the less you need"

This is the theme for my 2009 world tour. It is easy for us photographers to get caught up in the technology game- buying every wonderful piece of equipment that comes out. However, the best thing that we can do is to educate ourselves. As we strive to master our craft,  we find that we can express our vision with the simplest of tools. I remember bringing a ton of equipment to a wedding in the beginning of my career but as I progressed in skill, the less I needed. I could use my environment around me to provide the tools for me that I never took advantage earlier in my career.

Mastering one's ability to see light and to create it is essential to becoming a great photographer.

In a few days, I will be starting my new 2009 world tour. The excitement from our community is bursting at all sides and we just can't wait to begin our new adventure together. I am looking forward to also learning, growing and being the best mentor I can be. It is amazing how much I have learned over the past year and I have found that I had to revamp all me lectures which I believe are even better than before.

    Party in VEGAS

I hope to see many of you in 2009. If you are coming to WPPI I am having a party again and I'd love to hang, our community would love to meet you. Contact me  scott@scottrobertgallery.com

  • World's Best NYC E-session!!

    Scott Robert photography

    World's Best NYC E-Session

    World's Best NYC E-session

Yes, I know the title of this blog is a little arrogant but heck, I'm just gonna throw it out there. If I'm wrong so be it but I put my heart and soul into this session and it would tickle me pink if one of you loved this session like I do.

First off, Milyeri is pretty hot and a very classy woman. You gotta love her style. And Neil, the ultimate gentleman, is not bad himself. This couple is very photogenic and so I had that huge advantage going for me. Second, Milyeri is a photography maniac and what I shot in 4 days at my NYC workshop, we did it in ONE and a half!! She wanted photos of the entire NYC area and although she is sweet as honey, no one was going to stop her and her photo agenda!! If you have ever been to NYC you have to admit we covered A LOT of ground. It was great hanging out with Milyeri and Neil, I can't wait for their wedding in less than a couple months.

NYC has got to be one of my favorite cities in the world. Oh btw, a HUGE thank you to my amazing lighting assistant and friend Chris Chen. His help was instrumental for many if not all of the shots, I used off camera lighting on almost every image. Plus Chris knows NYC like the back of his hand, being a lifelong native. Who needs a subway map with him around!

It is exciting to see oneself grow as a photographer, actually teaching photography has made me better, I'm not sure if you can see a difference in my recent work but I know in my heart I am becoming more of an artist with my vision and it fuels a passion to pursue more fine art photography.

I shot over 700 images at this session and it took me probably 30 hours just to put together this show. Heck, I even added some landscape photos! I have this habit of creating a work of art with almost every photo I use in the slideshow. It is not very cost effective for me so I'm not sure how long I can continue doing this type of work, E-sessions, weddings, etc because of the extensive post processing I add to the photos and the time it takes. I have come to the realization that I am a fine art photographer- I love to finish my work with my signature style which is extremely time consuming, yet very rewarding to me- I don't even care if no one likes it, it just speaks to me and I can not stop myself from going down this path. However, if you want me to show up to your wedding, shoot it and hand over files, I'd love to do that too because the workload is so much better and fits my schedule.

I am also offering a FREE download of this show that can be viewed on you iPhone, iTouch, iPod video, Quictime player, iTunes, etc. GET THE LINK.

  • Grace and James Spectacular wedding.

Grace and James Whoop It Up!

    The Ultimate Hip-Hop Wedding

This wedding was jam packed with energy, good times, laughter, friendship, family, hip-hop and of course LOVE! At most a couple will choreograph one awesome dance (usually their first dance) but Grace and James went above and beyond and put together two captivating routines that sent the guests into frenzy. This, coupled with an open bar, set the tone for an awesome evening and day. To tell you the truth, the reason why this wedding was so great is because Grace and James are awesome people.  I want to wish Grace and James a glorious journey through life together.

I do bring this slideshow to you with some sadness, James' mother left this earth just a few days ago. I know this must be a difficult time for James and his family. I trust these images will bring back some very fond and special memories of your beloved mom. If pictures can speak a thousand words, I know your Mom was a woman filled with life, love and joy and will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers will be with all of you.

I am also offering a FREE download of this show that can be viewed on you iPhone, iTouch, iPod video, Quictime player, iTunes, etc. GET THE LINK.

I also posted the video on Facebook so please tag yourself!!

I did my very best to present this show as a story. I wanted the viewer to feel like they were there. There are a lot of sequenced images- I even put together 30+ image sequences of the dancing routines. Be mindful, I shoot in "one shot" mode!! hahaah. I even photographed and edited this wedding with a cinematic slant- many wide screen images. Let me know what you think.
