2009: The Year of the Ox

Photo taken in 2006 in China during our family trip to receive our adopted daughter Phoebe

    Happy Chinese New Year

In celebration of the Chinese New Year, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite photos from China. You can view more photos at www.limfamilystory.com

I guess I never really appreciated my culture until I visited China and understood what an amazing place it is. The people are so warm and friendly too. I knew the world would be captivated by China during the Olympics. First of all, it takes getting use to being around soooo many people. Have you ever walked across the street with thousands of people at a time? Have you ever been to a shopping mall 10 stories high? The amount of product being distributed is incomprehensible at times. How about being in a country where the largest family unit is three people? You can fit your entire family on a scooter! Visiting a culture that has been around for thousands of years is such a rich experience- there is so much to see and experience.

I hope you enjoy the pics as much as I enjoyed taking them. I know some of you have seen these before and followed my blog everyday of our trip back in 2006, your love and support for our family was incredible and I'll always remember getting emails and comments from around the world from people that didn't even know me but wanted to wish our family well.

The internet makes the world a bit smaller and it is wonderful how we can share our human experience with people around the world.

    Happy New Year!

I found this in an article online...

Those born in ox years tend to be painters, engineers, and architects. They are stable, fearless, obstinate, hard-working and friendly. Jack Nicholson, Jane Fonda, Walt Disney, and Anthony Hopkins were all born in the year of the ox.

For all you camera geeks out there, all these photos where taken with a Canon 20D and many with a 10-22mm lens. In fact I sold that lens to Curt Ogawa and now Curt is selling it because that darn guy bought a 5D MKII and wants to sell it so contact him if you want a great deal on one! Heck I may want to buy it back for my Rebel XS!!!

    How To Take Extraordinary Pictures

    Rock, Paper, Scissors

I had a chance to play "rock, paper, scissors" with some children at an orphanage in China. I couldn't believe the reaction I caused. Every child was running up to me, wanting to play this universal game. I couldn't speak Chinese so this was my way of communicating.

For a few brief minutes, I felt like the most popular man in China. Every child desperately wanted to spend a few brief seconds with me. I realized at that moment what a blessing it is to have family and a father or mother who loves you. It seems like a simple thing, just part of everyday life but the gift of love is an extraordinary thing.

As I began to leave, the children came running after me. I turned around and took this picture. It was a profound moment in my photographic career because I realized my interaction with the human experience can create a powerful image.

If you would like to read more about my experiences with our trip to China and the adoption of your two girls see www.limfamilystory.com

Extraordinary images are the result of extraordinary living. Live life and begin to see your photography in a brand new way.

I'm taking a photography group to China this year, anyone interested?

Btw, I took this picture with a Nikon film camera, N80 with a 35mm prime.

Learn Fine Art Post Processing in Vegas Workshop

Create images that pop, sizzle and wow
get the oooh & aaaaah factor

Would you like to learn ALL my post processing tricks? I have been post processing images for over eight years and I have tested my methods on thousands of images. I'm not saying my way of editing an image is the only way BUT if you like my style, I am one of the few who will share with you ALL my secrets. This post processing class includes the same Lightroom presets and PS3 actions that I use.

Post processing your image is a must especially for the digital artist. Why? Post processing EXTENDS or COMPLETES the vision of the artist. It can create a signature style that will set the photographer's work apart from the THOUSANDS OF PHOTOGRAPHERS competing for your client! Get the WOW factor and get the rave
you have been working hard to create.

I am not a post processing expert but I can tell you how to create impact, how to enhance the story behind the image. I explain the philosophy behind the creative process, learn the why behind the action and preset. Learn how to develop your own post processing method.

A photograph is very powerful, it not only can document but it can be a work of art, a timeless treasure that will serve your clients, friends, family and the world, years of appreciation- a celebration of life.

    Scott Robert WOW Workshop
Sun, Feb 15, 2009 Las Vegas

I am offering a special offer to only 20 people who want to learn my style of post processing. It will take place Sunday, Feb 15 at the Tropicana Hotel, Hawaiian Room #4 in Las Vegas. Requirements:

Beginner knowledge of Layers and Layer masks in PS3
How to import images into Lightroom
    Laptop optional
    LR and CS3

There will be lab time so I can help students one on one so please bring images to work on. Don't miss out- I can't promise when I will be holding a post processing class again. You will also get to meet and network with many amazing photographers around the world!

    Our Family Vacation in Hawaii

I'm finally posting our vacation pictures in Hawaii. I think we had the most fun hanging out with our family, eating and going to the beach. My girls can play at the beach all day! Amazing how much fun they can have with sand, water and a bit of imagination!!

Above is a map of our secluded little beach only the locals know about. I'm not going to say no one goes there but I will say it is extremely quaint and cozy. It is a small beach and if you happen to swim around to the next cove above, I hear it is a nude beach! Bring your 70-200! hahahaa.  We also went the black sand beach and saw a lot of amazing sea turtles!!

Here are a few preview- the more artistic images, sorry but the slideshow has a lot of group shots!! Some of the places we visited- City of Refuge, Black Sand Beach, Akaka Falls, Puako Bay Beach, Kona, Volcano.

    I'm Back!!

I know I have been away for awhile but I plan to get my blog up and running in 2009. There is a lot of exciting stuff I want to blog about, including more details about my workshops. It will include my LR set of presets and my PS3 action set!

    Finding Success in Hard Times

    Congrats to Erik Vail

One of the best ways to increase business is to simply be world class in what you do. Anyone can lower their price but to keep your upper hand and stay afloat in hard times, you need to be great at what you do. I always mention to people getting into the wedding photography business that you have to push yourself to be in the top 5% if you are going to be successful. Which means out of 100 photographers, you have to be better then 95 of them. Simply lowering your price will not guarantee an increase in business because people are always searching for the best value.

Take for example Zune and iPod- portable mp3/media players. If Zune and iPod both discounted their products by 50% I would assume iPod would still sell a heck of a lot more than Zune. I'm not sure anyone would buy a Zune! Why? because iPod is perceived as higher up on the quality ladder. Be at the top of the ladder and control the market and your sales. When hard times strike, people still purchase value. Higher quality products at lower prices are always more attractive than mediocre products at lower prices.

Erik came to one of my workshops in Canada last year. After talking to him, I knew he was concerned about being the best. His father who also is an amazing and respected photographer in the industry, has taught him so much and to be even mentioned as one of Erik's influences is very humbling and such an honor for me. It is so rewarding to see many of my students climbing that ladder and becoming the best at what they do and finding healthy doses of success. I see nothing but blue sky for Erik because he is committed to being the best and I'm glad I can help him in a small way.

Go to www.scottrobertworldtour.com to here what he had to say about one of my workshops. Thanks Erik for being an inspiration.
