    US Open 2008

    US Open 2008

I've been dreaming of going to the US Open for over 20 years! I coincidently had a job in NYC during the same time as the Tennis tournament but NEVER considered going until I arrived in Manhattan. I suddenly realized, by gosh, I might be able to go to the Open. I have a free afternoon and evening. But, I had many silly fears and questions...

How do I get ticket this late in the game?
Are tickets too expensive, I've never been to a tennis tournament?
How do I get there? I don't really know the NYC subway system.
Do I want to go by myself?
I had one hour of sleep the night before and was tired from a two day wedding in Miami and wondered if it was wise to go when I have to work the next day?

As I ran into New Kids sensation Donnie Wahlberg on my hotel floor and walked by the Conceirge I thought I'd just ask about Open tickets. Luckily, they had a ticket for $100 for the afternoon session but it had started already. I found out later tickets are hard to come by and it was totally in my budget! Nadal, the #1 player in the world was playing and won the first set already. I questioned whether or not I could get there from Manhattan in time to see him play. Venus Williams was playing after that so I could see at least one match. After the Conceirge convinced me to go, I grabbed my camera and took off for my adventure. They gave me the wrong subway directions but I still managed to get there and WOW, did I have a great time! Within one hour of deciding to go, I was realizing a dream I had for over 20 years...

    1. I got to see the #1 tennis player in the world!
    2. I saw Venus Williams play, got a courtside pass and worked my way down- 4 rows from the action! Heck I was sitting behind Camp Williams and her father was sitting right in front of me. I was probably on TV!! I couldn't believe I was sitting in the best seats at the US Open- just amazing.
    3. I got to go to so many other matches the entire night at other smaller venues which had a great ambiance.
    4. I saw Johnny McEnroe on the practice courts- a US tennis icon!
    5. Met some great tennis fans.
    6. Bought a Nike US open shirt
    7. Had a spectacular time!!

I learned something that night..... Dreams are closer than we realize but seem far away because we want to realize them ON OUR OWN TERMS. Often, to acheive a dream, we must step out of our COMFORT ZONE in order to acheive them. Yes, I had every excuse not to go to the Open but was so glad I overcame my fears and just went for it!

Your dream might be just around the corner if you think differently about it, nothing great in life just falls on our lap. We often will have to change something about ourselves to get something we really want. So don't be afraid to try something new and you will be amazed and surprised at all the wonderful things life has waiting for us!

Here are some pics I took at the Open.

Ended my day with some Matza Ball soup at Carnegie Deli!

  • Sometimes we just need to grab our camera and go out by ourselves and relax. These are really cool shots. Next time you can take your whole family and really just have some R&R and enjoy the games. Good Times as Kenny Kim would say!
