How to Spend a "Lovely Day" in San Francisco

Our 18th Wedding Anniversary, a day in the City

Just wanted to again thank Sienny and Minh for inviting my family to their wedding which was July 14th. Although, I was working on Saturday, for the most part our family could be together and more importantly, I could celebrate my 18th anniversary with Stacey on July 15th with our family in San Francisco.

We had a "lovely day" and the weather was perfect.

Here is how to spend a day in San Francisco...

We stayed at the Palace Hotel for $150 per night- they have a special rate, stay two nights and get the third night free!

From the Palace Hotel walk outside and across the street and catch the F line to Pier 39 ($3.50 for our family of 4, 10-15min commute)

Start the morning by grabbing a bag of mini donuts on Pier 39- they are delicious!! (refills for $2.50 per bag and they can stuff about 10 mini donuts)

Take the one hour Bay Cruise out to the Golden Gate bridge and around Alcatraz Island ($54 per family of 4) What a wonderful way to view the Golden Gate bridge and grab some awesome skyline photos!

From Pier 39, walk down Jefferson Street, shop for souvenirs and you can also "fall into the Gap" and do a little shopping. Chloe was so happy to find a belt on sale for $2, for some reason she just wanted to wear a belt with her pants, not sure why. If your into photography, be sure to pick up the portrait photo book "INDIVIDUALS"- it is a great learning tool and a study on portraiture by some of the best photographers in the world! It is a (red) product for $35. If you buy the gray portrait book, you will see my friend Tamlyn Tomita modeling in the book. It includes a really good audio CD, you can find the "Lovely Day" song I used for this slideshow on it. Great music for picture shows!

We proceeded to eat lunch at Boudin Bakery. There is a Peet's coffee inside too- better than Starbucks!!! Chloe wanted some fresh cracked crab ($5.75) so we bought her some at one of the famous corner crab markets.

We continued walking down Jefferson and found our way to the old Del Monte Cannery building. Buy a glass of wine or a beer and enjoy the San Francisco experience while listening to some nice acoustic music and a free concert in between some brick buildings made into a nice place to showcase local artists.

We proceeded to make our way to the Cable Car station across from the Cannery near Ghirardelli Square. We waited in line for about 30 min to ride a cable car ($5 per person) which will take you through Chinatown and ends down on Market Street.

Chloe and I watched the street performers break dance- I wish Steelo was there to bust a few moves!!! Stacey continued to her favorite shop- Anthropology. Enjoy tons of shopping along Market street. We went into the Virgin Mega Store and upstairs we treated ourselves to some Citizen Cupcakes ( around $3 each!!) I wanted to visit the Guess store but it closed early because it was Sunday.

Our hotel was now just a short walk from Market street. We freshened up and regrouped and took a short taxi ride ($6) to Ideale Ristorante on Grant. The pasta is homemade and delicious!! Entrees will cost you from $15-20. Have the Concierge call in for you from the Palace Hotel to make you a reservation because it is super popular. The owner knew we were coming from the hotel and greeted me with a friendly, "Hello Mr. Lim" when I walked through the door and waited on us. I thought I was a VIP!!!

After eating all that good food, the nice 30-40 minute walk back to the hotel was very pleasant as you walk past Chinatown and the business district.

And so ended our "lovely day". It wasn't the most romantic anniversary but being able to spend it with my family and enjoy some of the nice things life has to offer was a blessing I'll never forget!!

  • busy is good! glad to see you doing well!

  • happy anniversary!

  • happy anniversary!!! you have a beautiful family! :)

i am taken aback by how beautiful these pictures are. the colors are so vibrant! did you take this with an expensive camera? can it be done with a point-and-shoot type camera? great job! even though i live in san francisco and i see these places all the time, i still love it when people take pictures of it. san francisco always looks beautiful to me.

  • Yayyyyyyyyyyy for fun time! haha. Looks like a great trip and I'm glad you had some time to spend it with your family!

  • loveleeeeeeee happy anniversary!!!

  • wow - very productive day in your "lovely" day.

Happy 18th anniversary. Best wishes to you and your gorgeous family!

  • those last couple pictures of the street dancers reminded me of your other wedding - very cool.

  • Scott-eeee,

Happy Anniversary! We just celebrated our 21st and boy do the years fly by as you get older. The days become weeks, the weeks become months, then months become years.

How blessed we all are to see and celebrate with you and your family in the most beautiful city in the world!

Thanks again as usual for sharing such wonderful images. really love watching the kids grow up on the blog.

  • I used to be able to spend money like that lol!

I've been to that pier 39 area so many times, but it never gets old...

I am sad that you have not yet had the chance (or have you?) to drop in on Rodney Lough Jr's wilderness nature photography... Trust me Scott, the photographs inside there will simply take your breath away, they are so real... That guy takes printing to a whole new level, one that any professional photographer can appreciate...

    =Matt=

  • Dang - I was in SF that day too. Had Dinner off of Van Ness at some "ok" Sushi place - then drove thru Lombard Street on the way home - to play tourist for family visiting from Hong Kong. (Dude - if you ever go to Lombard - don't drive a 5 speed manual!!!!) That was scary.

  • aww wow! your family is so beautiful! i've never been to san fran. it looks amazing. thanks for sharing.

  • That sounds like a lovely day indeed <3

  • Thanks for the comment Scott. I went to SF few months ago but I don't htink I had as much fun as you did. I will have to venture out there again!

  • your daughters are way too cute

  • i miss SF already.

  • Hey, I think you should charge couples to take their photos on a romantic date. You could offer your photography to guys who are about to perform elaborate marriage proposals. Now that would be cool!!

  • How about we all meet up in SF for Blogfest 2007?!  Pick a day in August that we all could meet up in SF like at Pier 39 for lunch and we could each take pictures of each other for fun. Scott, you can shoot me being thrown off pier 39 into the bay, Matt we could put you out on one of the barges with the Sea Lions!

  • Congratulations Scott!  18 years is awesome, what an inspiration.  God has certainly blessed you my man!

  • Happy Anniversary Scott and thanks for sharing the images. I gotta say that SF is one of the nicest cities around. Any plans on doing a Next Level workshop in SF area?

  • Wow. i actually don't recognize a lot of these places even though i've been to SF.. well twice.

and HAppy Anniversary to you! 18 years and still going strong! May God continue to bless your marriage and your family!

  • happy anniversary! it's a true blessing to have a spouse who understands, supports and loves you for all that you are! we are so blessed to have that kind of Godly love in this lifetime!

  • wow beautiful! happy anniversary!! my favorite shot was of the boy breakdancing, where his chest is really low to the ground. did you lay down to take those shots?

  • I echo everyone's comments about happy anniversary.

Nice plug for Apple at the end there Scott!! hahaha

  • Hi Scott,

The Paris link sent me here but I wanted to say, "have a great time in Paris dude!"  I'll be joining you soon, but have a blast and we'll chat when you return.  Be blessed!

  • interesting how I live in the city and i don't care to do half of the stuff you did.
