"Oh snap! the 5D IS really amazing"

IMG_5830loLook what showed up on my doorstep yesterday!

Top 10 reasons why you should buy a 5D....

    10. The huge viewfinder... If your an old guy like me, your eyes aren't as good as they use to be and looking through a hugh viewfinder is such a delight, especially when your taking photos for 10 hours straight!

    9. It feels good and sounds good. I use to own Nikons and loved how the shutter sounded and how it felt in your hands, this baby feels really good in my hands and is a lot lighter than than the MKII cameras. It sounds good too.

    8. What else you gonna do with your money?

    7. If push came to shove, you could use just one lens with this camera, the 24-70L F2.8. I bet I could shoot an entire wedding on this lens if I had to!

    6. The large LCD is so nice (as mentioned especially for those of us with over 40 eyes)

    5. You like being one model behind- Once you buy the 5D, you know very well Canon will come out with a 6D!!!!

    4. Your Nikon friends will hate you and your 20D/XT friends too!

    3. Reduce your arsenal of lenses. Here are now my main three lenses:

#1 24-70L/F2.8 for all around use, #2 17-40L/F4 for those superwide shots I always take but on the 5D there is less barrel distortion! #3. 70-200L/F2.8

    2. All your photos look have a film quality look because now your depth of field is a lot more shallow on any lens you use because the 5D is full frame. If you have never shot 35mm film before, you're really going to enjoy the look of these images

    1. THE NOISE LEVEL. I swear the noise is at least 50% less than my 20D and I thought my 20D was amazing. Why is low noise important? Every lens you own just got better by two times. You can now take photos in low light situations that you didn't think was possible.

24-70L F2.8 lens. ISO 1600. Photo  under crappy lighting in my dining room. If you had a meal at my house, you know what sick yellow lighting we have. I tried to adjust white bal as best as I could but this is exactly what your eyes see. Anyways, after I took this photo I was floored when I saw the quality image in my computer. Notice the back of her head is already out of focus with this camera.

17-40L/F4. ISO 1600. Notice the film like quality of the photo and the shallower DOF on a wide angle lens- soft focus background. It also seems like there is less barrel distortion verses the 20D 10-22mm combo. This was taken in very low light. My shutter was probably down to 1/20 or so.  Since I was shooting at only 17mm I can go down to a lower shutter speed and still keep it fairly sharp.

These aren't the best examples of what this camera can do but I just wanted to show my initial images.

  • Brilliant!
I want one even more now...
    A great list of reasons!

  • oh man...thats a very merry xmas present to yourself. Enjoy! =)

  • RYC: You're a good man Scott, thank you!

  • I googled "Canon 5D" yesterday and the lowest price found on ShoppingUSA.com was $999 after rebate.  The ratings on the vender were all 5 star.  I would have bought it if my wife didn't come in the room.  I just bought my first DSLR (Rebel XTi) in September, and Wife tells me that it's good enough for me.  I think the work you've done on the 20D is amazing, but you really do deserve the 5D.

  • i have the same set up! it is good... btw to the guy above.... 999 after rebate sounds like something a person without eyes would go for =) dont fall for it but canon does have around 600 rebate if u buy lens and body together... nice

  • lickspleenfear  if you can buy the 5D for 999 i'll take 10 of them!! don't do it, it is a scam. ALWAYS buy your photo equipment from a reputable company! I agree with thkim !!

  • It does sound too good to be true.  I'll have to thank my wife.

  • I got one of those recently too. I love it!! I've heard the best deals for these are from those dell deals. But I got mine from B&H.

  • dang! movin' up in the world! congrats, if there's anyone who will use it well... it's you. i hope you still had enough money to buy something nice for your wife! ;) hopefully we can email/talk soon.

  • paperqueen  isn't that nice picture i took of my wife with my 5d good enough? actually, we are all going to hawaii after Christmas so that will be a nice.

  • Congrats on the new camera!  I would also love the Canon 24-70mm lense but it's too rich for my blood.  Would you recommend the Tamron 28-75mm?

  • so did you buy two? =P

  • the 5D would be a nice toy to have but alas i'll have to take a raincheck.  =(  and mimsmua - the tamron 28-75mm is a great and affordable lens.  i own one and recommend it!

  •  mimsmua for the cash the 28-75 is a great lens, I will be selling mine for $275.

GERKshinobi yes i will be buying another 5D. I will also be selling all my 20D equipment.

  • ryc: ahh okie awesome.  thanks!  i'll try to figure it out or ask someone.

congrats on your new purchase. heh.

  • SPECIAL PREVIEW. I'm selling the following equipment, I gonna post this on my blog tonight but if you are reading these comments you can have first crack at my stuff....

    Tamron 28-75mmF2.8 $275

  • Mr. Scott, well its about time you got your 5D camera! After shooting with Canon for 20 years I switched over to the Nikon d2X cameras which are awsome, then I saw the 5d images with the high ISO and that blew me away. I am, if you can believe this going to switch back to Canon just for this reason! Yea all my friends think Im nuts, but I shoot in low light all the time and the 5D is better than all the other top of the line Canon cameras. Pictures right out of it are amazing and the color, well you really dont need to fuss with it that much. Lets see how much they drop the price after the 1-13-07 rebate is over and introduce a newer and even better camera!

Anyhow all you Nikon folks, be checking ebay after the end of the year, I have tons of mint stuff for sale cheap!

    Randy

  • It'll be another year or so before I can own a camera let alone a 5d....=d

    what a great point.
    8. What else you gonna do with your money?

  • kindda random and stuff, but i noticed today you put down the recommended lens as the 70-200 f/2.8L IS version.. but i remmeber previously you said the "IS" was un-needed and that the regular 70-200 f/2.8L NON-IS version would be better choice?

  • ChinaPrep  you are right! i just couldn't find the amazon link to the non IS version!!!!

  • you sucker! i'm starting to dislike you. i told you not to post any pictures with your 17-40 on a 5D. you're gonna make me get that 17-40....i just know it. grrrrrr....hey, what's up with taking pictures of a model for your first posted picture with your 5D?

  • Congrats on the new gear!! I just got a chance to go through the tutorial in the previous post (white balance). Oh my gosh! That is so easy! Wish I had known that trick a loooong time ago. Thanks for sharing!

  • why is the non IS on the 70-200mm better than the one with the IS?  also, if money wasn't an issue, would you recommend the 16-35mm over the 17-40mm?

  • I am glad to hear that you went for the 5d, it is so worth it isn't it?
I waited for awhile also but once I rented it and shot with it, I ran right out
and bought one, it is just an amazing camera, the images are just like butter even at 1600 :)

  • I'd be happy with a Nikon D200 since it's half the price of the 5D and almost as good. Don't really need the full frame feature... otherwise I'd use film :) .

  • aren't you gonna be selling your EF-S 10-22mm also?

  • i hate you, ahahahaha jp! that is awesome! i had to say it since you said xt/20d owners will hate you hahahah! anyways cant wait to see some more work! =)

  • Congrats on your new tools!

  •  sorjai You must compare apples with apples, the D200 is more like the 30D with similar pricing. The quality of a camera image is mostly dependent on the size of the sensor. If you shoot at 1600 with a D200 it will look nothing like 1600 on a 5D just like 35mm will look nothing like a medium format image. When you compare cameras I think you have to compare comparable sensor sizes. Nikon is a great company and if they came out with the D200 a year or so after the D100 I probably would still be with Nikon but at the moment they have nothing to compete with the 5D. Full frame versus a 1.5crop camera is almost like comparing a 35mm camera and medium format camera. IMHO they are two different animals.

  • kennyahn  my 10-22 and 17-50 are already sold!

  • eazye45  yes, if money wasn't an issue i'd get the 16-35F2.8 but I already own the 17-40 so i'm sticking with it for now.

  • I got the chance to use the 5D as well, what really wow'd me was the files coming out of that camera. The colors are punchy, the contrast is snappy, and the of course the details in those files!

Hope you'll enjoy that fantastic camera!

  • welcome to the dark side... meaning you can shoot pretty much in the dark now without worry about noise (and also giving in to temptation :) ). i used mine about 90% of the time. the other time is when i need the extra 1.6 factor while being restricted to the back of churches. i also love the fact that i can use my favorite lens, the 70-200 2.8 IS, with the 5D... inside the reception area. you'll have a hard time doing that without full frame.

  • ooh, I just saw sorjai comment that the D200 and the 5D were almost similar cameras. I was about to purchase the D200 because it was a great camera that felt great in my hands. Then I went and played with the 5D and I was totally sold. I would liken this comparison experience to test driving a car. The D200 was like test driving a new Audi and enjoying the look and feel. Then playing with the 5D was like driving a Porsche where everyone may talk about how cool it was but not REALLY realizing how AWESOME it was until actually driving it. D200 is selling for $1,300 and 5D is selling for $2,100. That was an easy decision and I paid the extra $800.

  • Congrats!!!!  Isn't it just awesome getting new equipment to play with? -Jen

  • That didn't take long.
