Jenny and Tom Tease
Scott Robertphotographya brand new look at life www.scottrobertphotography.com [new images and music]Jenny and Tom TeaseWorkshop vs. Wedding ImageryJenny and Tom teaseSome people think it is cheating to use workshop imagery as part of their portfolio. I strongly disagree because both events exercise different muscles. In my humble opinion (IMHO), I've seen my work grow tremendously over the past year in regards to wedding imagery and I directly attribute that to attending workshops.Workshops allow the photographer to stretch their vision and to create images that are out of the box, different and new. The photographer gets to apply new ideas and perfect their craft. Many times a workshop will inspire the soul. Weddings on the other hand, force the photographer to be creative in a set environment. If you were a chef, a workshop would be like being asked to cook anything their heart desires, whatever they always wanted to cook. A wedding is like asking a chef to only cook chicken but to cook it any way he wants to.Wedding photography can look all the same after awhile if the photographer never gets inspired or pursues new directions- just like a mother cooking the same chicken dish, year after year. I've done over 200 weddings and it is hard to keep it fresh and innovative at times but that is the challenge and joy of it. The great photographers seem to keep pushing themselves into new directions- they have to or else the work becomes non-creative like a regular job- punch in and punch out.If I was a bride to be, and shopping for a photographer, I'd be thrilled to see my wedding photographer taking some time to expand, learn and invigorate their soul. The last thing I would want my photographer to feel is like my wedding is just another job! I've been coming up with new ideas on how to approach my wedding photography a little differently so I'm feeling good about where I am going with my wedding work and I hope my clients do too! I have sooooo many weddings to show you so stay tuned for some good stuff! Here are some tease photos from Jenny and Tom's wedding in San Jose. Workshop images are nice n' all but REAL wedding photos have a nice feel to them too! Enjoy.www.scottrobertstore.com toview more equipment recommendations

Paris was Amazing, see for yourself!!!
Scott Robertphotographya brand new look at life www.scottrobertphotography.com [new images andmusic]Paris, Simply AmazingParis 2008My best ever slideshow?Hold on tight because this slideshow whips through 182 images in about 5 min! This very well may be the best set of images I've ever put together. It has it all, the candid moments, fine art, photojournalism, glamour, romance, postcard moments, etc. For some reason, Paris always seems to inspire me. This slideshow is my best attempt at showing what it is like to be in Paris at one of my workshops. What doesn't communicate very well is the learning and bonding that happens. I am so glad to hear that the experience is often life changing for some and it is such a joy to give everything I know to those who really want to learn and grow.I just want to thank all those who came to this workshop, it was special indeed! We had people from all over the world- Canada, US, UK and Africa. Once everyone post images of this workshop, I will post links to their work. It was so nice to grow so close to these people. The bad part about the workshop is leaving and the emptiness many of us experience. Thank goodness for Facebook, it helps ease the pain of separation!!There were so many amazing moments- staying out way past 2am at a cafe and all of us talking deeply about life, relationships, etc. From a photography point of view, nothing beats hanging out at the Castle that we rented (thanks Arielle for hooking us up!) To shoot in that place is a photographer's dream, the day just evolved into something special, just hard to explain. When you do something amazing and share the experience with friends, it is the greatest feeling and is so intoxicating. Going out dancing the last night was very memorable too, especially eating pizza in our hotel afterwards at 3am and laughing till our guts hurt until 5am. What made it special was that I had an engagement session with a client the next morning at 9am. I got about one hour of sleep that night! I would also die for another one of those chocolate and banana crepes- just sooo yummy.
It is funny how many people come to my workshops for the teaching but what surprises them the most is the experience and community that is overwhelming- everyone wanting and pursuing many of the same things in life and finding people going through many of the same struggles. Everyone helping each other to get to the next level. It's kinda like finding paradise for a few days- experiencing many of the things we want out of life- adventure, beauty, learning life changing concepts, a healthy community, experiencing new and exciting worlds. This big, bad (as in good) world is amazing and to not experience it is a complete shame. To my fellow workshop people- I can't wait till our paths cross again, some in just a few weeks in Spain! I am blessed to be a part of your life. So I end this post with a few lyrics to the song in this slideshow....still think the world of youstill want the best of youstill feel the best is yet to come...Indeed the best is yet to come, I can not wait to see where life will take us all.

Great little Digicam for $300
Scott Robert
photographya brand new
look at life www.scottrobertphotography.com
[new images and
music]Great little digicam for $300
Panasonic FX-37
freakishly small, super wide digicam, does the job...
I am always searching for the perfect digicam. I don't think it exists yet but one day it will. I like super small cameras that I can fit in my pant pocket. If a camera is too big, many times I will not even bother to bring it because of size. If I have a super small camera, I end up taking it everywhere. And that is the point of photography- taking pictures. The more you do it, the better!
What I look for in a small digicam and why I like this camera...
1. Quality of image. This uses a Leica lens and is fast at F2.8 at widest angle. The color rendition is very good but because this uses a small sensor size, the noise is high unlike the Fuji digicams. Heck a Fuji Fd50 is only $200 and the quality of image is equivalent to a $500 digicam so why did I buy this one???
2. Super wide angle lens!!! This is a 25mm lens. One of the few small cameras that shoots this wide. When I travel, I find that super wide angle photos look the best. This is a huge plus for me because a superwide lens suits my shooting style, especially when I travel.
3. 720p movie mode. Super high res movies!
4. Build quality. Sturdy little camera.
5. Image stabalization, need this for low light shots with no flash.
6. Subjects are not intimidated by small camera and ignore you!
I was a little concerned about the image noise but I think it does an adequate job.

My US Open dream comes true!
Scott Robert
photographya brand new
look at life www.scottrobertphotography.com
[new images and
music]US Open 2008US Open 2008I've been dreaming of going to the US Open for over 20 years! I coincidently had a job in NYC during the same time as the Tennis tournament but NEVER considered going until I arrived in Manhattan. I suddenly realized, by gosh, I might be able to go to the Open. I have a free afternoon and evening. But, I had many silly fears and questions...
How do I get ticket this late in the game?
Are tickets too expensive, I've never been to a tennis tournament?
How do I get there? I don't really know the NYC subway system.
Do I want to go by myself?
I had one hour of sleep the night before and was tired from a two day wedding in Miami and wondered if it was wise to go when I have to work the next day?As I ran into New Kids sensation Donnie Wahlberg on my hotel floor and walked by the Conceirge I thought I'd just ask about Open tickets. Luckily, they had a ticket for $100 for the afternoon session but it had started already. I found out later tickets are hard to come by and it was totally in my budget! Nadal, the #1 player in the world was playing and won the first set already. I questioned whether or not I could get there from Manhattan in time to see him play. Venus Williams was playing after that so I could see at least one match. After the Conceirge convinced me to go, I grabbed my camera and took off for my adventure. They gave me the wrong subway directions but I still managed to get there and WOW, did I have a great time! Within one hour of deciding to go, I was realizing a dream I had for over 20 years...
1. I got to see the #1 tennis player in the world!
2. I saw Venus Williams play, got a courtside pass and worked my way down- 4 rows from the action! Heck I was sitting behind Camp Williams and her father was sitting right in front of me. I was probably on TV!! I couldn't believe I was sitting in the best seats at the US Open- just amazing.
3. I got to go to so many other matches the entire night at other smaller venues which had a great ambiance.
4. I saw Johnny McEnroe on the practice courts- a US tennis icon!
5. Met some great tennis fans.
6. Bought a Nike US open shirt
7. Had a spectacular time!!I learned something that night..... Dreams are closer than we realize but seem far away because we want to realize them ON OUR OWN TERMS. Often, to acheive a dream, we must step out of our COMFORT ZONE in order to acheive them. Yes, I had every excuse not to go to the Open but was so glad I overcame my fears and just went for it!
Your dream might be just around the corner if you think differently about it, nothing great in life just falls on our lap. We often will have to change something about ourselves to get something we really want. So don't be afraid to try something new and you will be amazed and surprised at all the wonderful things life has waiting for us!
Here are some pics I took at the Open.

Linh and Saul E session
Scott Robert photographya brand new look at life www.scottrobertphotography.com [new images and music]Linh and Saul / Back from the Dead!Linh and SaulIn our State Capital!I've done a lot of engagement sessions but this one feels different. The most important thing to remember if you are a couple doing an engagment session is to be yourself and don't be afraid to show emotion. This is what makes your session unique and personal. Hopefully your photographer will make you feel comfortable, if not, that is okay because a really good photographer will make you look natural, beautiful and romantic no matter what. So the more you have a good time with your session, the better the images.
Linh and Saul started the session by picking me up at the Sacramento airport and meeting me with this lovely sign. Wow, talk about making me feel uncomfortable and special!! But, geez, it is so nice to be loved!! Of course I took a picture with my iPhone and did a mobile upload to Facebook immediately!Saul and Linh are such fun people and I think it really shows in the images. Their wedding in Sept will be a blast.Back From the DeadYes, I am alive. I have been soooo busy that I just don't have that much time to blog. I have so much to say and share so hang in there with me, it's all good. Here is my schedule for the next couple weeks...Thurs (tomorrow) 7am- flight to Florida for a Ft. London 2008... my photos
Scott Robert photographya brand new look at life www.scottrobertphotography.com [new images and music]London and the need for CommunityWhy I loved LondonUK workshop 2008I'm not sure why every workshop seems to get better and better. Maybe because my teaching is getting better and my students are getting better too! Thanks so much to Bandele and Christina for helping me put this together. Christina's friend Dave got us into one of London's trendy art galleries- The Jago which was an amazing experience to say the least. So many artists would die for an opportunity like this- it is so difficult. I can't believe Dave opened this door for us and for myself and my students. To put together a show in a few days was flat out one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The owner of the gallery and other key people connected to the UK art scene loved our work which was a huge boost of confidence for us. Our images really rocked and I'm so proud of my class, all of them hit homeruns!! Congrats! Go to my Facebook to see a video that I took during the night of the exhibition. Our models; Liz, Ama, Fliss, Kelly and Vanessa were amazing and so generous with their time. It was such a blessing that EVERYONE had a great time and we all got along like good friends. Thanks to all the models, without them, our imagery would really suck!
Many students said that staying up til 4am the day before our show was one of the highlights of the workshop, seems a bit odd but not when you think about it- just the chance to work together and be forced to pump out something amazing was a true bonding experience. We worked so hard but I don't think there was a moment that one of us wasn't laughing and enjoying life. I just had to use a song from one of my all time favorite musical groups, The Brand New Heavies- a London based band! The song I chose talks about staying together and having that invincible feeling when all together. This is exactly how I feel about the community I am trying to create with all my workshop people.I've been thinking about the power and importance of community in a person's life. Often we are defined by the community we are associated with. For example, being a member of your high school basketball team is different than being a member of the USA Olympic Basketball team. In one group you are considered better than average, the other you are classified as one of the best in the world. The circles we hang in define who we are. The healthier the community, healthier the members in that community.
What do you you want to accomplish in life? Does it match the communities that you associate with? Do the people you hang around want the same things in life that you want? Are they equipped to help you at the highest levels? If not, you may want to change your community or find one that will better suite your needs, goals and passions.
I leave you with the Lyrics of the slideshow song. I was so blessed and honored to be a part of this London workshop community!!! This slideshow is dedicated to everyone involved!!
Day by Day by the Brand New Heavies Together we got love, we got peace
Together we got everything we're ever gonna needI don't know what you can call it
All I know is that it works
Here's the funny thing about it, sugar
Sometimes it feels so good it hurtsWe've got a
lover's fascination
(That) keeps getting better all the time
There's no sweeter sweet sensation
Than knowing what we've got is rightTogether we got joy, we got faith
Baby we got somethin' nothin' ever can replaceCHORUS
Baby belong together - day by day
We're keepin' it strong together - day by day
Takin' it nice and easy as we go - day by day
Takin' it day by day by dayBaby, we ain't missin' nothin'
('Cause) what we have is tried and true - ooh
And we know that this is somethin'
We don't ever wanna loseWe've got the perfect situation
And it keeps getting better, better all the timeRepeat Chorus Twice
Together we got
love, we got peace
Baby we got everything we're ever gonna need
Together we got joy, we got faith
Baby we got somethin' nothin' ever can replaceWe've got the perfect situation

I'm off to LondonUK workshop 2008In a few short hours, I'll be off to London for another fabulous workshop. I can't wait.
